Hey everyone, Spencer here.
How did I join Cristen DeAnn Photography, what has it taught me, and what exactly do I do for the business?
I wasn't always a part of the business. This is partly due to the fact that Cristen didn't move to Tennessee till 2016, and mostly because we didn't even meet till 2017... I knew that she had a photography business back in Arizona, and I also knew that she had been wanting to "restart" it here in Tennessee.
I don't remember the exact conversation, but I remember Cristen mentioning how I had a good eye, based on a few phone photos she had seen me take. It wasn't an automatic "Oh, since you're dating me, you're in the business now" thing, but a question. She asked if I was interested in joining the business, and although I was extremely nervous, I was also extremely excited. I said "yes."
I am what's referred to as a "second shooter."
Basically, Cristen takes lead, and I take alternate angles, scenery shots, and a lot more. I'm her other-half at photo shoots, making sure nothing is missed in the grand scheme.
This is actually my preferred role, because once I got into the swing of things, I realized that I have a lot of freedom. I'm able to take all kinds of shots that might otherwise be missed, and since Cristen and I have different "eyes," our final photos are often a combination hers and mine.
One of mine is on the left, and one of hers on the right.
As well as being a second shooter, I also maintain our website domain, the email newsletter, and a few more "techy" things.
I’ve loved being able to see happiness in our clients, and it’s comforting to have their trust to capture their events. It’s such a neat niche of a role in that you get to be a part of all kinds of intimate accords; you’re there, but you’re not a part of it, so you get to take it all in as it happens. It’s wonderful to make lifelong friendships. I’m still regularly in touch with most of our wedding clients, and it’s great to see their married adventures as well as receive their congratulations after my own wedding.
Overall, I've had a blast not only working with my (now) wife but also in learning the ins and outs of photography and what it takes to help run a business.
